THE ROSKILDE FESTIVAL
NOW AND THEN THE “FISKETORVET” – THE NEW SHOPPING CENTRE OF COPENHAGEN |
St. Valentine`s Day in my school |
|
The
Roskildefestival before:
Former
rock festivals and different youth-meetings in a.o Newport, The Isle of Wight
and Woodstock inspired the Roskildefestival.
And
the first festival took place in 1971.
The
first one was badly organized; there were 20 bands and just one stage. There
were 10 000 participants each day. The first festival lasted for 2 days.
The
Roskildefestival now:
Since
1971, the festival has become a great success. Each year 60 000 people rush
to Roskilde, everyone wants to be a part of the great musical atmosphere.
A week or more before the actual festival starts, people from all over the
country start getting together in front of the gate to the area where the
festival takes place.
The
festival is for old as well as for young. In the beginning it was only rock
fans who came to the festival, but now it’s an open place.
All
kinds of music are welcome and in the recent years e.g. techno and ethnic
music have become a part of the biggest Scandinavian festival as well.
The
Roskilde festival is also known for its great recycling programme.
The
many food and beer tents cause a lot of trash and if there weren’t any one
to clean up the mess the festival would be one big dumpster. That is why some
clever people said to the many participants that they could earn money by
cleaning up all the glasses from the many beer tents.
You
can quickly earn thousands of kroner by picking up trash!
Last
years Roskilde festival:
Last year –in 1999- when Denmark
fought in the world championship in football it was decided to put up a big
screen so, that the football-fans would be able to watch the games. This and
a lot of other things made the festival so special. The festival is not only
a place where you listen to music and get drunk! It’s also a place where friends
and family can visit the different cultures.
The
greatest thing about the festival is, that even though 60 000 people is staying
at the same place, no serious accidents have happened. But last year there
was a terrible accident! 8 young people were stamped to death during a rock
concert.
http://www.roskilde-festival.dk/
People
all over the world listen to music, especially the younger people.
The
Music Start.
Music comes from the early
Middle Age where they played an instrument called the lur and they also played
the Bagpipes and the flutes to entertain the village people
Radio,
television and CDs, we hear music all the time. When we relax, when we do
home work and when we party. But it can also be dangerous and illegal. In
1999 a big tragedy happened on “The Roskilde festival”. “Pearl Jam” was playing
on the stage, and suddenly all people went crazy. All people were pushing
and shouting. After a few minutes, 9 young people were dead because of breathing
problems and also because they crushed under other people who were trying
to get away.
One
of the other big problems with music is the illegal trade with copied CD’s.
It is not illegal to copy CD’s, but it is illegal to sell the copied CD’s
out with any permission. We hear a lot about it in the newspapers and on television,
and the police is trying almost everything to stop the illegal trade. But
examinations showed that the problem was increasing, and youngsters today
have about 3 copied CD’s. And the adults are doing nothing about problems.
Voxpop
The
television programme “Voxpop” is Denmark’s favourite music program, maybe
because it is the only one. It is a program where they send the newest music
videos from all over the world. You can phone the programme and vote for your
favourite music video. They most of all send pop videos from famous pop groups,
but they also send videos from rock bands. For example: Slipknot
and Blink 128 (Rock bands).
The programme is produced in a studio in Sweden. There are Danish and Swedich
producers who find new videos for the programme.
One of the most popular bands in Denmark are “Aqua”,
“DAD” and another one is the “Olsen Brothers.” Here is a little portrait of
the “Olsen Brothers.”
Jørgen
Olsen (born 15th of March 1950) and Niels "Noller" Olsen
(born 13th of April 1954) originate from Odense, Denmark. They
moved to Copenhagen with their parents and by the age of 12 and 8 respectively,
they had started the band "The Kids" with Morten and Niels Thybo.
In 1965, the supported The Kinks on their visit to Denmark. In 1967, the Kids
performed two songs in the movie "Masser af pigtråd". Later that
year, The Kids won a musical contest in the Copenhagen Forum. By 1970, the
brothers were simply known as Olsen and changed band members regularly over
the years. At one time, Erik Stephensen, now better known as a Danish TV manager
and journalist, played the guitar in their band. At this time, Jørgen Olsen
was writing most of the group's material.
At
the beginning of 1971, Jørgen and Noller auditioned for the hippie musical
"Hair" and both got roles. Jørgen had a leading
role and on the subsequent album he sang five
of the songs and even released the title song in Danish, together with Eddie
Skoller. The brothers had great success in Hair and following this, they contacted
managers and record companies to present their own material.
The
material was very good, and the Olsen Brothers recorded their first album
"Olsen" in London with Peter Knight's Orchestra. Released in 1972
and with all songs in English, this was their first album to sell more than
100,000 copies in Denmark. Suddenly the Olsen Brothers were the greatest all-time
Danish pop idols. This famous duo performed all over Europe - from Copenhagen's
Tivoli to Knokke in Belgium. Two singles were released from their first album:
"Angelina" (still their most famous song) and "Jimmy Loves
Me". Both singles became great hits on the Danish charts.
In
2000 they won the European Song Contest with the song "Fly On The Wings
Of Love" (in Danish ("Smuk som et stjerneskud") and have again
become stars throughout Europe with the winning tune and the album "Wings
Of Love", a degree of success seldom enjoyed by Danish performers. The
Olsen Brothers are living legends in Danish pop and rock, about which much
more could be said.

Graffiti is illegal, but young people still do it..
What
does graffiti mean?
The dictionary defines Graffiti as a picture,
a word or a sentence which is scratched or painted on a wall. The word Graffiti
comes from the Italian word “graffo” which means scratching.
When did the real graffiti start?
In
the beginning of the 1970´s was the name Taki 183 was known all over New York.
The name could be read through the whole town, it popped up everywhere you
walked. It was written on the trains and walls where ever there was a free
wall. The world’s most spread graffiti
is probably a drawing of a long- nosed guy with big eyes looking over a wall
with a text “ Kilroy was here”. The Kilroy-
phenomenon comes from the USA and spread to the whole world.
Graffiti
is illegal in Denmark and in other countries, too.
A lot
of graffiti is made on trains walls, containers, houses and billboards.
The
Danish railways system (DSB) uses 40.000.000 Danish kroner
to
get the graffiti off the trains.
Graffiti
is illegal and will always be, BUT! There is a lot of people who still does
it.
Graffiti
won’t be stopped!! But graffiti also exist as an art expression. There are some graffiti painters
who do their work as decoration and in some places these artists are asked
to decorate walls or billboards to make the city funnier and more crazy.

“ Saving private Ryan “ is a emotional movie based on hope and patience,
for the family back home. For a mother who lives upon hope and for a son who
sacrifices him self for his country.

Today films are very popular among youngsters.
The cinemas earn a lot of money on
the consumption of tickets. Most teenagers spend a big amount of
money on them. So do we!!
One
of the movies that we find very fascinating is “ Saving private Ryan”, it’s
a magnificent film directed by Steven Spielberg who is the genius behind many
movies for instance :
“ Schindler’s
list”. In other words the man is obsessed by the Second World War.
The
main character in the movie is Tom Hanks, who plays the leading role as Captain
Miller and has also performed in other movies such as “ Forest Gump “ and
“ You’ve got mail ” . The other essential actor is Matt Damon who plays James
Ryan ( private Ryan ) and he has also contributed in “ The talented Mr. Ripley
“.
The
whole film is based on D-day that was on the 6th June 1944. It shows the invasion of France with a violence that is almost beyond imagination.
We have two questions that we keep asking our selves, were we not supposed
to be civilised ? And live in the spirit of brotherhood ? We believe that
the war doesn’t really symbolise these two things. Do you?
The
actual plot of the film is to show that death is random and stupid in war,
it doesn’t benefit anyone but only takes your loved ones away from you.
The
film is from 1998. The plot of the movie is a mission called Saving Private
Ryan, where Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks ) has to save the only surviving
Ryan out of 4 brothers.
The
movie contains very violent scenes that might not be appropriate for younger
children. You might think that some of the scenes are not very realistic,
but the moviemakers have tried to come as close as possible to the real thing
and according to our point of view they have succeeded!
In
the beginning you see every thing through the eyes of Tom Hanks and somehow
influences you in a very strong way. You see fear and terror on their faces
and for once we know why it’s there.
The
movie shows how the United States would put many lives to danger to save one
man, to spear his mother for losing
her last son.
We
recommend that you see this movie and if you like watching scenes with a lot
of action, we guarantee you’ll like it.
On
a scale from 1-5 we grade it:

Let us show you the new shopping centre
of Copenhagen
The first shopping centre in Denmark was called
“the Rødovre centre.” The centre was built in 1966.
Now
there are a lot of shopping centres in Denmark and the newest centre is called,
“the Fisketorvet”.
The
Fisketorvet is a big shopping centre. The centre is quite new and has a lot
of different shops. The centre was built with 2000 parking spaces, over 100
shops, 15 restaurants and more than 10 cinemas.
The
centre is situated 5 minutes walk from the Rådhuspladsen in Copenhagen (the
city). The view from the centre is to the harbour of.
About the centre:
The
most visited restaurant is the Madonna restaurant. There are also many fast-food
restaurant, cafés bars and ice-cafés.
Sometimes
there are people who are playing music or clowns who fool around for the children
and the grown-ups.
In
the centre there are many shops with fashion clothes and shoes. There are
also a lot of sport equipment shops and big supermarkets.
Before
the centre was built there was a fishing market on the southern part of “Gasværkshavnen”
where the centre is now. The real fishing market was built in 1958 and has
been replaced in 1999 to the new shopping centre, “The Fisketorvet”.
Entertainment:
During
Christmas time there are a lot of different entertainment, a lot of music
and theatres. There are also beautiful Christmas decorations.
Cinemaxx:
The
cinema is the biggest in the whole of Scandinavia. The sound in the cinema
is fantastic and very loud.
The
cinema of the Fisketorvet look like a real American cinema.
The atmosphere on the Fisketorvet is great,
and we think the centre is beautiful. Come and enjoy the view on the harbour!

Two
girls want to tell other young people about being young, about drugs and going to parties, because we
think it is very important that young people know what they are dealing with!!
In Denmark you must be over
18 years, before you can buy alcohol in discoes, but if you buy alcohol in
a shop you must only be 15 years.
Many
people under 15 years love to get drunk, but they can not control themselves.
Some young people go to private parties all the time (every weekend)
A normal
weekend for a teenager is very different, but we have interviewed two young
people to hear about their normal weekend.
The
first one is a girl:
Friday
after school, I go to the supermarket, to buy alcohol. Some times I share
the alcohol with my friends. I never tried not being able to buy alcohol.
I spend
a lot of time in the bathroom, if I must go to a party at 9 o’clock in the
evening, I begin at 4 o’clock.
Before
I go to the party, I am together with some of my friends, to get some thing
to drink.
When
we comes to the party, we begin to PARTY…
Saturday
morning I am together with my friends, because they have slept at my place.
Sunday I’m doing nothing, because I’m so tired.
The
second one is a boy:
After
school on Fridays I buy alcohol and I don’t have any problems with it.
It
is different who I’m going to party with. I don’t spend a lot of time dressing
up myself, because I don’t think it is important, so I just go to the party
to get a lot of alcohol.
On
Saturdays I shall always play football, it is very hard when I have hangover,
I once tried to fall on football ground because I had drunk the day before.
Sometimes I party on Saturdays, too, but not if I’m tired.
If
I have partied on Fridays and Saturdays then I sleep all the Sundays.
That
was two of our friends, as you can see, there is a big difference between
girls and boys. They have something in common: THEY DRINK!!
Drugs:
Drugs is a very bad thing to
take, because you can die, as it is so dangerous!
We know many young people who have tried it. Many
people buy drugs in discoes and take them there.
You
can buy all kinds of drugs: Speed , Extacy, hash, koffeine, heroine, epo and
mushrooms!
It
is not illegal to have drugs on you, but it is illegal to take and sell drugs.

Why are mobile phones so popular
among youngsters in Denmark?
1 to 2 years ago the number
of teenagers having a mobile phone increased in Denmark. We think that between
75% - 80% of the 14 years old have a mobile phone the reason is that it is
very fancy to have a phone - and also they have become cheaper. The average
price at the moment is app. 600 kr.
Which types do the youngsters
prefer?
The most cammon models are
Ericsson and
Nokia, two Scandinavian companies. Ericsson is
made in Sweden and Nokia in Finland. It gives alot of prestige to own
the newest
models - that’s why the teenagers often wish for the newest model.
Advantages if you own a mobile
phone:
- You can
get in touch with friends and family anytime.
- You can
play games on it.
- You can
send messages through the SMS system (short messages service).
- The phone
has also a calculator.
- The phone
contains a private phone book, too.
Disadvantages if you own a
mobile phone:
- It’s very
expensive to have a mobile phone.
- You always
have to remember to switch off the phone at school - otherwise the teacher
will take it and your parents must go to the Headmaster’s office to get the
phone back.

Read about the career of the world- famous Danish top-model,
Helena Christensen
A baby is born:
On
a cold winter day shortly after Christmas, the 25th of December
1968 a baby saw the light for the first time. This baby had no idea that she
was going to be one of the most popular super models in the world. The little
girl was baptised Helena Christensen. Her father came from Denmark and her
mother came from Peru. When she was 4 years old, she got a babysister, her
name was Anita. She was raised in Copenhagen until the age of 12, where she
moved to Canada alone for a month.
Was it a dream to become a model?
She didn’t dream of being a
top model, but according to her mother,
she always liked to pose in front
of the camera. It was her mother who send some pictures to the French fashion magazine “ELLE”. Helena passed an exam (we
don’t know which) in Copenhagen. She went to the “ELLE” studio in Paris, and
should take part in a casting. The photographer had collected some models
to pick one out (dream work). The photographer, Friedemann Hauss, had an easy job. He said: “During my career
I have seen many girls pass by. When Helena came to the studio, and even before
I talked to her, I knew that I was facing a great personality. There was a
kind of electric excitement between me and Helena and I must say that it is
unusual with this kind of meeting and it can lead to big
mistakes.” Shortly after
Friedmann called Helena and wanted
to shoot some photoes on the beaches of Normandy. They resulted in a series
of excellent photoes of Helena.
Her life as an adult:
Now
when Helena is a grown-up, she still works as a model. She has two children
of her own and adopted 2 children from Peru, and she is still very sought
after all over the world. Even though Helena is very rich and beautiful, she
has not got many real friends. She knows a lot of people, but all of them
are super models too, e.g. Naomi Campbell and Claudia Shiffer. Her parents
place is in Denmark and her apartment is in Monaco. But still she feels like
Denmark is her home.
Read
about the fashion for the young people in Denmark…
As many of you know fashion
has become a very important topic for the young people today. Many people
spend thousands of money on clothes every month, and some people don’t. That’s
just like fashion, some people are into fashion, and some people don’t care.
Our
opinion is that fashions are important, because, well, you can’t give ones
reason why fashion is so important. It’s just a thing that lies deep inside
you. We love clothes and fashion, and we think that it's a girls’ thing, that
everyone, or almost every girl is burning with desire to have new clothes.
So
we’ll say, that fashion plays a very important role for us.
We’ve
made a questionnaire to show you an example of how important fashion is to

Democracy
is information, participation and involvement!
Many
years ago in ancient Greece a lot of people had their own opinion and just
did things they wanted to do. But when people had different opinions they
had to find a solution of the problems, because everybody wanted to fulfil
their own ideas and people shouted and got very angry at each other. But one
day two young men called Demo and Cracy went up on a high table. The crowd
stopped shouting and just looked at Demo and Cracy. Demo and Cracy said to
the crowd that it couldn’t stay this way. You couldn’t find any decisions
in this way. You needed to work in another way: According to the principle
of democracy. Democracy is about information and involvement. Demo and Cracy
told the crowd about it. If people don’t live according to democracy, society
will break down. Of course everybody couldn’t get their opinion through so
they had to elect leaders and to form committees.
But why is that an important story to tell you? Because democracy is essential
in all schools. And in all societies, too. In our school we practise democracy
a lot. The students have their own committee. It’s called the pupils’ council.
It’s a council where 2 representatives from every class participate. When
a class have a problem or an idea they can go to the representative and s/he
presents it to the council. Then the council discusses the problem/idea. And
if it’s necessary, they go to the headmaster. In this way the pupils take
part in the decisions. And that is democracy.
We can also use democracy in the classes. If we are going to make a decision,
people present it for the class. Maybe a pupil has an idea or a topic for
a project. Then the class can discuss it and people can say their opinion
about it. But sometimes it is necessary to reach a compromise between pupils
and teachers. But of course it’s the teachers’ definitive decisions. When
we participate in the decisions the teaching is getting much more fun. And
we get an inclination for learning more.
In the local area we have the town council. The town council is situated
in Greve and Karlslunde is a part of the council of Greve. The council consists
of members of different political parties and the mayor represents the biggest
political party. We have the members of the town council which consists of
21members from the different political parties and the mayor is the leader
of the town council. The inhabitants elected him in 1993. He is a member of
the Danish Liberal Political party. But apart from the Danish Liberal Political
party we also have other parties. In Denmark we can vote when you are 18 years
old.
What make Basketball such an
interesting sport around world? To get an answer to that I have talked to
two young boys, Peter and Nikolaj who play basketball, and who are fond of
the game.
“I
like the sport because you are going to be quick all the time”, said Nikolaj,
and Peter agreed. “And I like to be a team”.
Basketball is one of the most
popular games in the United States, along with American football and Baseball.
NBA is abbreviation of National Basketball Association. We would say that
Basketball is one of the most well paid sports in world. For instance the
very famous basketball players, Michael Jordan, who just quit the NBA, he
once signed a contract with The Chicago Bulls on 200.000.000 American dollars!
There are also basketball cards,
which many children and adults spend much money on. The cards are in a paperbox,
so you never know what cards your going to get. In some stores you can buy
single cards, though. But that are only the very rare ones, valued 50-500$.
All-stars Y
Every
time the NBA season is over, there is an All-star game between two teams.
A Western and a Eastern
team. The two tams consist of the
best players during the season.
It’s an exiting game, every
year, which a lot of people are looking forward to watch.
There is also a team called
The Harlem Wizards.
They
travel around the world, doing basket basketball shows.
Many
people buy very expensive tickets, just to see them entertain. It’s a big
success every time.
Every
year, after the all-star game, there is also a dunk competition. There are
3 players who have been chosen to take part in the competition. Every player
have 3 tries. It’s very simple: The player who makes the coolest dunk win.
This year it was the players: Vince
Carter, from the toronto Raptors, Tracy McGrady,
also from Toronto, and Steve Francis, from the Houston Rockets.
Vince
Carter made the coolest dunk we have ever seen. He ran towards the basket,
as the normally do, and then he jumped and made the dunk. But the cool thing
was that he didn’t hang in his hands. Vince Carter hang in his elbow-joint!
–He won the compatition.
OPEN AIR CAMP
FDF makes a lot of trips into
the nature for young people. We have been camping a lot ourselves. E.g. we have been on a canoe trip where we made
food on a spirits stove, sometimes we slept outside under the sky or in a
tent. WONDERFUL….
We
are from the Karlslunde FDF district.
The district was founded in 1949. At that time
there weren’t so many members, but now we are the biggest
district
in the country with about 322 members. In 1949 the meetings were held in some
rooms at the church. It developed quickly so the district could buy a house
that had to be restored. The house was opened in 1984 and was called “Nordstjernen.”
Very
quickly the district grew in the Karlslunde
Beach area. In the beginning the meetings were held at the local school, but
it was not working out so well, so quickly they started planning to buy another
house. And in 1979 the district could open the district house “Lyren.”
FDF
means “voluntary boys’/girls’ union,” in Danish “frivilligt drenge/pige forbund.”
and reminds a little bit of boys’ and girls’ scouts.
In
Karlslunde there is a summer camp and a district camp every year.
Last
summer all toddlers and youngsters were on a summer camp at Fjeldholm in Jutland.
Meanwhile all the older ones including us were in Sweden. A really wonderful
camp where we sailed in canoes, fished and went on some very long hikes. The
summer camp is one of the best things you can do in FDF.
The
district camp is just a weekend in February/March. It’s a camp where you are
in groups and make different things. It’s a camp that the camp members are
looking forward to. Especially us.
For
some time the Karlslunde district has had a contact with others countries.
A.o. Poland and Latvia. The district has visited Latvia once and Poland once.
Some from Latvia and Poland have also been with us at a summer camp. It’s
a collaboration that FDF appreciates and it’s exiting to meet other people,
who live in a different part of the world.
Once a year FDF Karlslunde
has a big bazaar. Everybody can give second hand things that FDF can sell.
The money goes to materials and camps in the district. The bazaar is a big
event and many people in the town take part in it. The income of the bazaars
is very important so that we can do things as FDFs.
The 15th of June 1999 Karlslunde district
celebrated its birthday. It’s turned 50 years. It was a big thing: A group
picture was taken, there was a big summer camp at SLETTEN, a special place
in Jutland for FDFs.
In
FDF you are split up into groups. When we have meetings we do a lot of funny
things e.g. being out in the nature, and making food on a spirits stove. Sometimes
we also go on adventure camps, and other times we just stay at home in the
cottage. In the cottage we eat cakes and cookies. We also make contests and
drama. All that gives us much more solidarity.
We
are often in the nature, where the whole team sits together around the fire.
We make popcorn, toast, sausage and bacon or we make our own tea.
In FDF we have been on many camps. We are always
on camps in summertime, but there are also other camps around the year. On
the camps we make a lot of funny things, one of the best thing could be a
whole day where we could sail in canoes.
Hikes are one of the best things
to do as a member of the FDF. Some members have tried to be on “coming home,”
a trip where you’ll be put somewhere in the city and then you have got to
find your way home. The trip took 42-hours to get home.
In
the FDF we get different marks to prove that we have passed the tests. E.g.
the stab mark. There you are going to prove that you’re old enough to use
a stab. We have also taken the 20 kilometers’ mark, where we proved that we
could walk 20 kilometers. And many others marks.
FDF
has their own shirt. Every member of the FDF wears it. It’s red and blue.
We put our marks on the sleeves.
What is a sportsfreak ?
And
another one David Beckham – a Manchester United players. He runs very fast
and then he is a very good player indeed.
Are
you a sportsfreak? Or do you know any?
The Tivoli is a big attraction in summertime and
also in wintertime. For the 7th time, the Tivoli has opened the
garden for visitors in November/ December.
With all the lights and small booths you really
get a good Christmas spirit, there are 75 booths filled with goodies and presents
and 41 restaurants and eating places has opened.
Many families have made it a Christmas tradition
to go to the Tivoli in December.
There are 110.000 sparkling glow lamps so it’s
best to be there when it’s dark, because then all the lights really come to
their full right.
Maybe it’s hard to imagine that some lights and
booths could get you in a Christmas spirit. So if you are one of those who
hate Christmas - just listen now, then we will take you into the land of wonders!
You arrive in the dark, you go under the big shining
gate and suddenly you are in another world, different from the one you use
to walk around in, not filled with cars, buses, schools, homework and other
boring duties. It’s a world full of light, music, wonderful smells and Christmas
spirit.
If you go trough the main gate, the first city
you will walk into is the Nordic; it smells of spruce and Christmas cakes.
While the sheep are bleating the wool is being carded to gloves and caps you
can buy in the small booth around in the Nordic City.
The English City is covered with red bows, holly
and geese are cackling around. In the booth they are selling original British
Christmas specialities from teddy bears to fine English marmalade. In the
city of Alps they are serving hot glühwein together with a little Danish.
Small dwarf sheep are walking around with bells on their necks, and give us
the right Christmas spirit.
You find the world of pixies in the middle of
the Tivoli. It’s a big blue tent encircled by Christmas trees, a high tower
with pixies on it shows the way to the entrance.
Inside the tent there are a lot of different pixies,
lights in all different colours and small pixy houses. There are for example
a pixy school, a pixy bakery, a farm, and father Christmases cave with reindeer
and his little helpers, it’s very dark so the lights are very important.
It’s hard to describe how beautiful and sweet
the little pixies are, with the light on them and their little arms and legs
moving in tact to the Christmas music which is playing in the tent. Here you
can also by glühwein and æbleskiver ( A little
warm and round Danish Christmas cake )

Rezekne district is situated
in the eastern part of Latvia, in the centre of Latgale
region, 245 km from Riga. It borders on Preili and Madona
districts in the west, on
Balvi district
in the north, on Kraslava
district in the south, and on Ludza district in the east.
The state highways Riga-
Jekabpils-Rezekne-Ludza - the border of Russia (Terchova),
and the border of Lithuania (Medumi)- Daugavpils-Rezekne – the border of Russia
(Grebneva), and the international railway lines of Berlin-Warsaw-Vilnius-
Daugavpils-Rezekne-St. Petersburg, and Riga-Krustpils-Ludza-Moscow cross the
territory of the district and intersect in Rezekne, which is an important
road junction.
There are 29 self-governments
in Rezekne district: the town of Vilani and 28 civil parishes. Rezekne district
has the territory of 2812 km2 and 43157 inhabitants (in the beginning
of 1999). 53% of all inhabitants are Latvian, 42% Russian, 2% Belarussian,
1% Polish, 1 % Ukrainian, 1 % is of other nationalities. 20% of all inhabitants
are until the working age, 52% in the working age, 28% above the working age.
Forests occupy 30% of the total area of Rezekne district, including:protected forests 7%,
conserved forests 13%, economic forests 80%. Softwood occupies 57% of the
common territory of the forests, hardwood - 43%.
Agricultural land
makes up 47% of the total area. The low intensity of cultivation, multiform
landscape, and hydrological conditions are favourable for biodiversity in
the territory of Rezekne district. For example, .the white stork and the little
eagle are living there. The territory of agricultural land increases because
of the low intensity of the cultivation.
Swamps make up 4% of the total area of the district.
There are about 300 deposits of peat. The total reserves of
natural peat: 608237
thousand m3, industrial peat: 232000 thousand m3 The state energy
program foresees the use of local fuel for the heating. Because of this,
the output of the peat will increase and the territory of
the virgin swamps will decrease.
There are two deposits of minerals of the national significance:
Pertnieki dolomite deposit with the area of 124.5 ha, and Griscati gravel
- sand deposit with the area of 48.4 ha. The dolomite of the Pertnieki deposit
is used for the production of splinters, dolomite-meal, and building-lime.
The Griscati deposit is the largest deposit of gravel and sand in Latgale
region.
Rezekne district
has the largest total area of lakes in Latvia. Lake Razna (57,6 km2) and Lake
Lubana (82,0 km2) are the largest and, for the fishing industry, most important
lakes in Latvia. Rusona, Adamova, Feimani lakes are significant for fishing
and recreation.
All rivers of the district belong to the Daugava river basin.
The Rezekne river (116 km) and the Malta river (115 km) are the longest of
them. The rivers of Rezekne district have always had a great historical and
economic significance. There is the hydroelectric power station of Sprukti
on the Rezekne river and the hydroelectric power
station of Vilani on the Malta river.
Rezekne district is
situated in the plateau of Latgale. The highest hills of Latgale
region are located
in the territory of Rezekne district: the Lielais Liepu hill, which is the
3rd highest hill in Latvia (289.3 m), the Dzcrkali hill (286.3 m), and the
Dubuli hill (273.8 m). Because industrial production is concentrated in the
city of Rezekne, there are only small enterprises in the territory of Rezekne
district. The stock company "Struzani peat factory" is the largest
enterprise of the district. There are also several Ltd, and proprietorships
that are
occupied with logging and wood-processing. Climatic conditions
and the quality of the soil are appropriate for the development of the agriculture.
Dairy-farming in particular, but also
cultivation of grain, sugar-beets, vegetables and flax, pig-breeding,
sheep-farming, bee-keeping, and non-traditional agriculture could be profitable
branches of the farming.
The great number
of small rivers and lakes, the large areas of forests that are home to many
species that are endangered in western Europe, such as beavers, pine-martens,
wolves, heat-cocks, and picturesque, mosaic-like landscape are excellent preconditions
for
the development of the
tourism.
There are 163 cultural
monuments of state
significance in Rezekne district. The Luznava estate complex
is the most prominent one, but the Catholic churches of Stolerova, Feimani,
Vilani, Berzgale, Dricani, Ozolmuiza, Ciskadi and Sarkani are also worthy
of attention. Altar pieces, crucifixes, sculptures of these churches attract
not only because of their artistic value, but also because of the legends
about their ability for miracles. There are also portraits of the
remarkable persons of the region, the pottery of the best ceramists of
Latgale region (vases of A. Paulans, P. Vilcans in the Feimani church), and
precious metal altar accessories. The town of Rezekne is administrative center
of Rezekne district. The town and the district have separate administrations
because Rezekne is the town of republic importance. The town of Rezekne serves
like educational, cultural center of district. The
biggest catholicchurch - the Jesus Heart Cathedral is the center of diocese
of Rezekne—Aglona with bishop seat.

In my school St. Valentine`s Day is celebrated every year. Our boys and
girls love this
festival very much because they can tell each other about their love.
In my school in the hall we hang a box onto the wall where girls and boys
drop their letters. And when it is full with letters,
the certain students- “postmen”
pass down these letters to the addressers. In letters
stundents write about different things, but
mostly – about love. Girls and boys can write letters to the friends, to teachers.
In school we hold disco, funny contests , play jokes. Pupils are very active
and enthusiastic about taking part in all these actions. The winners got presents.
During disco, while they are dancing, girls and boys can tell about their
love to each other. We like this day and are always looking forward to it.

Sport plays a very important role in our school especially
for boys. The school is not large, but there is everything you need for
playing
volley-ball, basketball, football and tennis... We have physical training four times a week. When the
weather is fine we have it outdoors. There is a ground for sport behind the
school.
We have several basketball teams at our
sport because it always takes gold, silver or bronze medals.
I don`t think thatwe are bad in other school
subjects: we take part in different subjects olimpiads and often very successfully
but sport is the most favourite subject of our students.

My Birthday is the 5th
of September. Last year I became fourteen.
Then all the events happened. That was Tuesday It was a school
day, but it
didn’t bother us to
celebrate my birthday
very well. The guests (my friends)
came to my
place and we
sat down at the table
and after that...
We decided to do something
interesting: I, Lena, Ira, and Andžela did
terrible hair styles,
we painted
our faces and went
to take photos.
In photo one can see
how “beautiful”
we were.
Then we played interesting games and
went walking. After the walking the party was over.

In
Rézekne we have a nice tradition: Annually, on 8th of September,
we hold our town festival. This day many local people come to Rézekne, streets
are full of people who live here and their quests.
The
festival starts with a church service in our Catholic Cathedral, but then
exhibitions, concerts, walks along our Latgales street
which is the oldest in Rézekne. Crapfmen, grama
clubs, choirs, music groups try to perform their best.
There are special entertainment
not only for adults but also for small kids:
The
most favorite one is riding small horses-ponies and the first experience of
riding a real horse ( of course after the supervision of professional horse-rider).
In the evening when it gets dark you can enjoy dicos, bars, café which are
all open this day, and admire the salute.

Grandson: A four.
Grandfather: Oh, shame on you. When I was a student,

Tommy: It was late when I started from home.
Teacher: Why didn`t you start earlier?
Tommy: Because it was too late to start earlier, sir!

There are many cars, buses, trolley buses, trams in the
street. A man is standing just in the middle of the street. He asks the policeman
“What is the shortest and the quickest way to the hospital?” The policeman answers: “If you just stand where
you are standing now, you will get there very quickly. This is the shortest
and the quickest way to the hospital”.
**
Teacher: In winter the days are short, in summer they
are long. Can you tell me why it is so?
Tommy: Yes, sir I can. Every thing shrinks in winter
because it is cold, and in summer everything expands because it is warm.
